Fire Sprinkler Testers
Fire sprinklers are required by the California Building code in many commercial and residential buildings depending on the size of the building and any flammable or hazardous chemicals stored within the building. Building managers are required to test sprinklers at a frequency determined by the State Fire Marshall as per Title 19 Regulations. Insurance companies may also require sprinkler testing, even when they are not required by the building code. Sprinkler system testing may require the release of water from the sprinkler system . The release of the water itself is a discharge that needs to be managed using Best Management Practices. Often sprinkler inspections are visual or only require testing a few valves. When testing the valves, a significant amount of water containing potentially stagnant water and pollutants may be released from the system. In these cases, the Fire Department and building managers must implement best management practices to prevent pollutants from entering the storm drain system or be prepared to treat water before it enters the drains.
